Richard Haas

“I come from the Pentecostal/Holiness background. I grew up in very spirit-filled churches where the Holy Spirit manifests itself in many ways during service. My family was always involved. My grandfather was usually the assistant pastor, my grandmother taught Sunday school, my mother was the featured singer in most of the churches we went to and even I taught Sunday school after I turned 18.”

Richard also says: “I could sum up what St. John’s means to me in one word. Freedom. True freedom to worship God as I live my life in the way that God intended for me. A life that is open and honest. St. John’s is a non-judgmental space where people from all different backgrounds and walks of life can feel free to be who they are in their walk with Jesus.”

Charles Leake

Charles Leake
Deacon

Charles LeakeCharles says: “Lord, I have been with St. John’s for many years. But I feel there is newness each and every Sunday. Now let’s see: I’m a Deacon and the Deacon Assistant to the Youth Ministry, Joyful Morning Choir member, and Co-Director of the Service Ministry with Fred Cannady. I am a Prayer Warrior! Praying is one of my gifts for sure. Prayer is just a way I talk with God. But I am learning to listen more these days.

“If you ask “some,” they might say that I have the gift of Preaching. Well all I can say to that is, “What God has for me, it is for me.” I am a Blessed soul. My Blessings come in many ways. I love serving God by serving God’s people. There’s just a wonderful feeling that comes though me when I do. St. John’s is home for me. And no matter where I roam, it will always be. Hopefully, it can be home for you too!”

“During my time in the military, I used the excuse of causally searching for a church to attend. When I returned to the United States for retirement, I had very little money to connect electricity and water. But I had a foundation built enough to know that God was going to take care of things. It seemed that every prayer was answered. I prayed for a job after retirement, and it was provided. I prayed for a church to accept me for me and God gave me St. John’s MCC. I became a member of St. John’s MCC in 2005.”

Val also says: “St. John’s MCC is a big enough place where one can freely embrace their own spirituality, but small enough where one can feel loved and part of a family.”

Ed Smith

Ed Smith
Deacon

Ed SmithEd says, “I attend St John’s because it offers me a place that does not question my personal walk with God. It is a spiritual home that celebrates my journey, without condemning my progress, and at times the lack thereof. I walked through the doors of St John’s in the fall of 1996 and instantly felt at home. Because of that first experience, I have incorporated into my personal ministry a personal greeting to everyone in the sanctuary before the morning service on Sunday. I continue to come back because I truly feel the presence of God within these walls and in the people who fellowship here.”

Paul Kessel

Paul Kessel
Deacon Candidate

Paul KesselPaul says: “I’ve been a member of St John’s since March of 1992. I was one of the original members of the Voices of St John’s Gospel Choir, been co-leader of the FaithWorks small group and helped organize trips to an amusement park for several years.

“St John’s has been and continues to be an important part of my life. Most of the people I’m truly close to are people I’ve met through the Church. I love being part of a welcoming and affirming body that invites people to come as they are and doesn’t use the sacraments as a way to separate members and non-members.”
