Sunday Afternoon Study

Love Is a Choice: Sunday Afternoon Study

Spring into Summer with a Clean Slate

The next session is this Sunday!

Love Is a ChoiceNow is the time for Spring Cleaning within your life. When we do a thorough Spring Cleaning in our homes, we go through all the old stuff, junk and clutter that plagues our closets, basements, garages and attics, and we go through and clean everything with a ‘fine-toothed comb.’ How much more should we go through and clean our hearts and minds out from that excess baggage we have carried around with us as it strips and cheats us out of living our lives wholly and peaceful within. It is hard to allow God to bless us when we are so full of old ‘tapes’ and clutter that would keep us from the true blessing God has for our lives.

Love Is a Choice is the book study that will help you find that peace hiding deep within and give you coping mechanisms to deal with codependency. For more information, please contact Tara Marten or Kristen Bogren.

The following is an excerpt from the book.

In its broadest sense, codependency can be defined as “an addiction to people, behaviors, or things.” Codependency is the fallacy of trying to control interior feelings by controlling people, things, and events on the outside. To the codependent, control or the lack of it is central to every aspect of life.

The codependent may be addicted to another person. In this interpersonal codependency, the codependent has become so elaborately enmeshed in the other person that the sense of self — personal identity — is severely restricted, crowded out by that other person’s identity and problems.

Additionally, codependents can be like a vacuum cleaner gone wild, drawing to themselves not just another person, but also chemicals (alcohol or drugs, primarily) or things — money, food, sexuality, work. They struggle relentlessly to fill the great emotional vacuum within themselves. Our patients have described it as “walking around feeling like the hole in the center of the doughnut. There is something missing inside me.” (Love is a Choice, p. 11, 12)

Mark your calendar with all the study sessions: May 23, June 6, June 13, June 20, June 27, July 11, July 25, and August 1.
