Observe Holy Week with St. John's MCC

Events - Worship Events

Holy Week is the last week of Lent before Easter, beginning on Palm Sunday and ending on Holy Saturday. Holy Week is the part of the Church Year where Jesus’ final moments are commemorated. This year, it began this past Sunday.

Palm Sunday:

Palm SundayOn the sixth Sunday of Lent we commemorate Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Worship services include blessing of the palms and a procession. Some traditions call this Sunday before Easter “Passion Sunday.” Others call it “Fig Sunday.” St. John’s MCC celebrated it with Joyful Morning Worship at 11:00 am and an Evening of Praise and Worship at 7:00 pm. Our Senior Pastor, Rev. Belva Y. Boone, preached on the subject, “Know Where You’re Going Before You Get There!” You may hear the podcast of her sermon here.

Great and Holy Tuesday:

Stone PillowOn Great and Holy Tuesday evening, our congregation gathered together to watch Stone Pillow. In the movie, the legendary Lucille Ball takes on a more somber role than usual as bag lady Florabelle in this heartwarming movie about hope and friendship. Florabelle becomes the unwitting guide to the streets for Carrie (Daphne Zuniga), a New York social worker who thinks she has lessons to offer the down-and-out clients she serves at the homeless shelter. Soon, however, Carrie realizes that she's the one who has much to learn.

Spy Wednesday:

Judas betrays JesusThis is an old and uncommon name for the Wednesday of Holy Week, which commemorates Judas’ agreement to betray Jesus (see Matthew 26:3-5, 14-16).

Holy Thursday (Maundy Thursday):

Communion elementsThe name “Maundy Thursday” comes from Jesus “mandate” to love one another as he loves us. This day celebrates Jesus’ institution of the sacraments of Holy Eucharist and is also known as “Shear Thursday” by some. At St. John’s MCC’s observance of Maundy Thursday, we commemorated the last supper that Jesus ate with the disciples. You may listen to the Podcast of Senior Pastor Belva Y. Boone's message to the gathered Saints here.

Good Friday:

Good FridaySt. John’s MCC remembered Jesus’ crucifixion and death on the cross at a service on Good Friday. Worship included a dramatic retelling of the Passion story - reading excerpts of the story of the crucifixion and death of Jesus from John’s gospel, the Veneration of the Cross, and the singing of hymns of the Cross.

Holy Saturday:

Holy SaturdayThis is the final day of Holy Week. There are few specific customs associated with Holy Saturday, except that it is the final night before the Feast of the Resurrection, which begins at the Great Easter Vigil. Our prayer vigil began at 6:00 pm and continued through 12 midnight in the Sanctuary. Thank you for your prayer support.
